In 2007 a retired American military intelligence officer donated an extraordinary collection of photographs to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The photographs were taken between June 1944 and January 1945 and belonged to Karl Hoecker, adjutant to Richard Baer, the last commander of Auschwitz.

When author William Ryan came across them, he was fascinated – because in the photographs we see very ordinary men, on the face of it, except that they are, in fact, some of the worst mass murderers in history.

The Constant SoldierHis novel The Constant Soldier is a fictional recreation of the rest hut near Auschwitz where many of the photographs were taken and explores the small steps ordinary people took in Nazi Germany that ended with great evil. It has been described by AL Kennedy as ‘a nuanced, complex and gripping tale of guilt and love that captures the chaos at the end of WWII.’

William will show some of the Hoecker photographs and explain how he used them and other photographs to create a work of fiction that is, at the same time, firmly rooted in history.

William Ryan’s Soviet Detective novels, The Holy Thief, The Bloody Meadow and The Twelfth Department have been shortlisted for the Theakston’s Crime Novel of the Year Award, the CWA New Blood and Historical Daggers and the Irish Fiction Award as well as three times for the Irish Crime Novel of the Year Award.

Llun drwy law Amgueddfa Coffa’r Holocost yr Unol Daleithiau

Dydd Gwener 5 Mai, 1.00pm
Amgueddfa Wrecsam

Yn 2007 cyflwynodd cyn swyddog gwybodaeth gyda Byddin America gasgliad o luniau yn rhodd i Amgueddfa Coffa’r Holocost yr Unol Daleithiau. Tynnwyd y lluniau rhwng mis Mehefin 1944 a mis Ionawr 1945 gan Karl Hoecker, cynorthwyydd gweinyddol Richard Baer, pennaeth olaf Auschwitz.

Pan ddaeth yr awdur William Ryan ar draws y lluniau roedd yn eu gweld yn drawiadol iawn gan eu bod ar yr olwg gyntaf yn portreadu dynion cyffredin ond mewn gwirionedd dyma rai o lofruddion ffieiddiaf hanes.

William RyanMae’r nofel The Constant Soldier gan Williams Ryan yn gyfrif ffuglennol o fywyd yn y cytiau gorffwys ger Auschwitz ble tynnwyd llawer o’r ffotograffau ac yn archwilio’r camau bychan a gymerodd pobl gyffredin pan oedd yr Almaen dan reolaeth y Natsiaid a arweiniodd at weithredoedd anfad. Yn ôl AL Kennedy dyma ‘stori gymhleth, afaelgar am euogrwydd a chariad sy’n darlunio anhrefn diwedd yr Ail Ryfel Byd.’

Bydd William yn dangos rhai o ffotograffau Hoecker ac yn egluro sut y defnyddiodd y lluniau hyn a rhai eraill i greu gwaith ffuglennol sydd hefyd wedi’i wreiddio’n ddwfn mewn hanes.

Mae nofelau Ditectif Undeb Sofietaidd William Ryan – The Holy Thief, The Bloody Meadow a The Twelfth Department wedi’u rhoi ar y rhestr fer am Wobr Nofel Dditectif y Flwyddyn Theakston, gwobr ‘New Blood and Historical Daggers’ y CWA a Gwobr Ffuglen Iwerddon, yn ogystal â theirgwaith ar y rhestr fer ar gyfer Gwobr Nofel Drosedd y Flwyddyn Iwerddon.
